Mexico is one of Addis Ababa’s most historically significant districts, named after Mexico’s diplomatic solidarity with Ethiopia during the Italian occupation of the 1930s — Mexico was among the small number of countries that refused to recognize Italy’s annexation of Ethiopia, and the square was named in tribute. The gesture was reciprocated: Mexico City had its own “Ethiopia Square” until it was replaced by a metro station of the same name.
A neighborhood built around a landmark
The original Mexico Square traffic circle was significantly rebuilt in 2013 to make way for the Addis Ababa Light Rail, which now has a station roughly 500 meters from the original site — giving residents direct light rail access to the rest of the city. This makes Mexico one of the better-connected residential districts in central Addis Ababa, without the premium pricing of Bole.
